PAL is an abbreviation for Phase Alternating Line, a color encoding method used in broadcast television. Bringing color television broadcast first to Germany and UK in 1967, it freed Europeans from TV sets with the “Tint” or “Hue” controls that had flummoxed North Americans since 1954.
